The
New Jerusalem Bible is the best English translation
you can buy. It comes directly from the original Hebrew and Greek.
It is modern and clear but not simplified. It is exceptionally
well footnoted and cross-referenced, and it presents verse as
verse, not as prose. This is a Bible for people who read.

Richard Elliott Friedman's
Who
Wrote the Bible? is a fascinating examination of how
the first five books of the Bible were woven together from earlier
texts originating in separate kingdoms, many years apart. Friedman
explains what motivated the writers, and how the parts were eventually
cobbled together interleaved line by line in places.
